Off-Grid Innovation Powers Remote Healthcare in the Pacific

• 13.10 2025

At CE+T Power, we believe technology truly matters when it serves people. In Vanuatu that belief came to life through a project that brought more than electricity. It brought reliability, care, and hope to a community where power means survival.

Powering care, empowering lives

In the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, reliable power isn’t just a convenience; it’s a matter of life and death. Frequent outages caused by tropical heat, humidity, and devastating cyclones place immense strain on the nation’s fragile energy grid, putting essential services and lives at risk.

For healthcare providers, like Medical Santo, based in the northern city of Luganville, an uninterrupted 24/7 power supply is vital. X-ray machines, life-saving equipment, and critical refrigeration for medicines, depend entirely on consistent, clean energy.

A partnership to protect what matters most

Recognising this urgent need, Australian company CD Power took on a bold challenge: to design and deliver a standalone, disaster-resistant off-grid system capable of providing constant, reliable power in one of the world’s most demanding environments.

At the heart of their innovative solution lies CE+T’s Sierra technology, a modular converter system that ensures seamless power delivery even under extreme conditions. Paired with CE+T’s Inview monitoring, the system offers real-time visibility and control, guaranteeing that essential medical equipment receives steady, secure, round-the-clock power.

Medical Santo needed a solution that not only safeguarded sensitive medical equipment but could also be easily maintained,” explains CE+T’s Ian Rowlands. “That’s where our Sierra modules really shine. Their hot-swappable design means maintenance can be done without ever interrupting supply. Combined with the precision of InView, the system delivers a clean, consistent voltage that healthcare technology demands.

Let’s have a closer look:

The complete Standalone Power System (SPS36) — integrates:

  • 15 kW solar PV array to harness Vanuatu’s abundant sunlight
  • 55 kWh actively-cooled lithium iron phosphate battery for reliable storage
  • CE+T Sierra converters (36 kVA) with Inview monitoring
  • Backup generator for added resilience.

Since installation, Medical Santo has operated entirely off-grid, ensuring 24/7 access to life-saving energy. The results have been transformative, enabling continuous healthcare deliveryreduced operational costs, and a major step forward in sustainability and energy independence for the region.

Beyond Innovation : A commitment to Humanity

For CE+T, the project represents far more than technical innovation. It embodies the values that drive us, using innovation to serve people, protect communities, and make a lasting difference.

It’s fantastic to see the system up and running,” says Ian Rowlands. “As an initiative that protects lives and strengthens communities, we were delighted to be able to financially support this project and ensure much-needed health care services are provided where they are needed most.”

Projects like this remind us that energy is not only about technology and innovation. It is about humanity, resilience, and care.
